What is developmental editing?
Developmental editing is macro editing. It is looking at the “big picture.” It examines your phrasing and work structure, as well as plot holes, poor character execution, and more. Overall, it ensures your story flows well and makes sense.
When working with me as a developmental editor, it is important to be flexible. Developmental editing can lead to big changes in the book and it is important to be open-minded when you get the edits back.
To do developmental edits, I use Microsoft Word and comments. I will annotate your manuscript using inline comments to explain how to fix certain parts of your story and why. I will also provide an editorial report at the end, which is an overall critique commenting on what I think you should change (referring to the annotated manuscript) and what I think you did well.
All edits are made in regards to the Chicago Manual of Style.
WHAT YOU’LL GET WITH A DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT:
